THE MIDSUMMER HARE
A Musical Fable for narrator and orchestra
by Sue Heaser
Music composed by Peter Creswell
The piece is set in the fenland around the source of the Little Ouse and Waveney rivers on the borders of Norfolk and Suffolk. It takes place over the course of a single day in mid summer.
The story is an original fable that celebrates the beauty of these valley fens and their wildlife. A narrator tells the story while the orchestra plays the music. Each musical instrument represents a particular creature with exquisite solos and glorious tunes that are as delicate or comical as the creatures themselves. Meanwhile the whole orchestra creates the atmosphere of the fen with poignant melodies swelling to rousing symphony when the drama of the story takes hold.
This is a unique new genre of musical performance that has some similarities to Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, but goes much further with the interaction between narration and music.
It is suitable for all ages.
